First of all you have known for a long time that you have needed a website if your still not sure if you need one or not think about this...

Google reported that website businesses increased by 10% last year and predicts that it will increase by 15% this year so if we take that calculation into reality this means over the 2 years your business could have increased by 25%!

Now do you KNOW you need a website :)

Of course your website has to be done properly and that is the confusing part of it all!
We are often told by our new clients that they need a website so that they can have people contact them out of hours - basically this means you are providing a way for your customers to contact you when it is convenient for them to do so.

Some clients know they have to have a way of getting their services across to the viewer and some have products they want to sell to the viewer.

So let us now work out what type of website you need

Businesses that provide a service

for example:
Care homes for the aged, dentist or medical office, solicitors and lawyers, professors, hobbyists, business supports and so on

All of these businesses have a common theme, they require their viewers to have the ability to contact them, to see the services that they can provide in a given area.
They don't need to put prices on their website's and these sites don't need to change their text very often.
Conclusion:

  • A simple static website with up to 4 or 5 pages
  • A contact form
  • A domain name
  • And hosting

Notes:
A domain name is the url or address of your website in the case of ours it is www.brittanywebdesign.com (make sure the domain name is purchased in your name some companies don't so be warned!) and the hosting is where all of your information is stored so that they can be accessed 24 hrs both of these you will have to pay renewal fees each year.
A static site means that your web designer (hopefully us!) do all your updates when you need them if you do and are charged an hourly rate.

Businesses that rent/lease or let

for example:
Car hire, bike rentals, van hire, accommodation, boarding, holiday homes, baby equipment hire, sporting goods, disabled equipment and so on

Now these businesses have goods that are released to the public now depending on how often they need to update their content in the case of goods like vehicles sporting etc this would be often as they expand their range - accommodation probably not so often - so they will need either one of these options
Conclusion: Option a)

  • A static site with 4 or 5 pages
  • A contact form
  • A domain name
  • And hosting

Option b)

  • A content managed system
  • 4 or 5 pages
  • A contact form
  • Domain name
  • Hosting

Add ons that would add value to your website include:

  • Online booking software
  • Availability software
  • Photo gallery
  • Guests comments

Notes:
Domain name and hosting you will pay yearly, a static website you pay for the design and then if you want updates you just pay by the hour. With a content managed system you pay monthly for the use of the software. For your add ons there is usually a set up fee and or licence fee if the software has a licence it would be a yearly licence and would have to be renewed each year you want the to have access to the software this is the case with the online booking software we mentioned above the others we have listed above only require a setup fee and these prices can be found on our online software packages page

The businesses that have items for sale

for example:
Florists, sporting goods, catering, book stores and so on these types of websites should for search engine optimisation have a few static pages to help promote their online store they obviously need to have a system to sell their goods with the ability to add the stock so that it can be deleted/edited etc they also need the system to take the order, keep count of stock, charge for postage and multiple items and then take payment so what they will need is,

Conclusion:

  • A simple static website for seo with up to 2 or 3 pages
  • An online shopping cart,
  • Paypal account or world pay account so that payments can be stream lined into their accounts
  • A domain name
  • And hosting

Notes:
For more information about online shopping carts and what they can do for your business go to our oscommerce online shop information page.
A method of putting your money into some where is a must and paypal is universal accepted world wide it was around 190 countries last time I checked. The domain name and hosting is to be paid yearly the shopping cart is a once off fee if you are paying a monthly fee you are being ripped off! There are other options that will do the same job - sell your items!

The last style of website is the memberships and forums

for example:
Educational learning and studying, health information, diet information, crafts and arts hobbies, photography in fact any social group can use these.
Now these can be set up to have it all free to the public to join in and see all the information or you can section it so that some get free parts and others are paid members so they are privileged to view and partake in another section that free members can not log into.

Conclusion:

  • A membership forum software system
  • Paypal account if taking payments
  • Domain name
  • Hosting

Notes:
Forums and membership sites have a once off fee to set it up - again if your paying a monthly fee for yours there are other options!
The domain name and hosting are yearly fees if you are storing details an extra option you might want to think about is SSL secure socket layer so information is encrypted
